As of the 2010 census, there were 38,521 people, 14,864 households, and 8,820 families residing in the city. The population density was 910.0 people per square mile (351.4/km2). There were 14,926 housing units at an average density of 387.2/sq mi (149.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 78.6% White, 11.4% African American, 0.8% Native American, 2.1% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 3.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 19.8% of the population.There were 14,864 households, out of which 30.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.7% were married couples living together, 13.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.8% were non-families. 30.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.01.In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 13.1% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.The median income for a household in the city was $43,557. Males had a median income of $31,828 versus $23,363 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,029. About 19.9% of the population was below the poverty line.
